One of Paris’s first museums
Today’s Musée du Luxembourg is the heir to several successive institutions that contributed to the cultural influence of France and Paris for almost two centuries. As early as 1750, the Musée du Luxembourg was the first museum of ancient art open to the public. People came from all over Europe to admire Rubens’ cycle on the life of Marie de Médicis, as well as dozens of masterpieces by Italian, Flemish and French masters, now on display in the Louvre.
In 1818, King Louis XVIII approved the creation, in the Palais du Luxembourg, of a museum dedicated to the living arts.
Now administered by the French Senate, the Musée du Luxembourg presents two collections a year, focusing on twentieth-century modernity, photography and women artists.
A green and historic setting
In the heart of Saint Germain des Prés, the Musée du Luxembourg offers a cultural and green setting for professional events. Two reception areas are available for private hire:
- The Tivoli, a vast cathedral-like space adjoining the exhibition halls and able to accommodate up to 200 guests
- Le Salon de thé Angelina, located on the forecourt of the Musée du Luxembourg, with its shaded terrace
Private guided tours of the Museum’s temporary exhibitions can also be organized, to add a cultural and artistic touch to your business events.
