Art at the Musée Cernuschi
The Musée Cernuschi is housed in a private mansion built at the request of Henri Cernuschi following his trip to Asia. Travelling through Egypt, China and Japan, Henri Cernuschi admired the marvels kept in the temples and succeeded in assembling over 5,000 pieces for his personal collection.
He imported this collection from Asia at a time when the Impressionists were fascinated by Japanese prints, and built a superb mansion to house the works brought back from his many travels. This Parisian museum is the legacy of several decades of cultural discovery, marked by the evolution of the Western view of Asian art.
Since its opening in 1898, the Musée Cernuschi has been a showcase for the various forms of artistic expression from China and Japan.
Following major archaeological excavations in China and Vietnam between 1910 and 1946, the Musée Cernuschi is dedicated to Chinese antiquity. It is also open to living Asian arts, such as contemporary Chinese painting and Japanese calligraphy.
